What’s a net-zero-ready renovation?

Lagois Design·Build·Renovate’s lead designer, Jeff Hurdis, explains a net zero home produces as much clean energy as it consumes, with superb insulation, high-performance windows and airtightness. It significantly reduces carbon emissions, and this aligns with global sustainability goals.

Net zero standards

Net-zero-ready renovations are built to the same standards as net zero homes except that the renewable energy system (i.e., solar panels) have not yet been installed. This is because it’s wise for homeowners of existing homes to monitor their energy production for a year following such a renovation before they decide on the size of solar panels they need.

Heating and cooling

A net zero home has efficient heating and cooling systems and advanced ventilation. It provides the ultimate in comfort and health indoors.

The Lagois crew uses AeroBarrier, a sealant that covers any of the smallest cracks or holes throughout a house. They also use an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) that is designed to be connected into the HVAC system. The ERV pulls fresh, clean air into your home and takes out stale or unclean air and pollutants.

Industry pioneer: Lagois Design·Build·Renovate

The team at Lagois Design·Build·Renovate achieved the very first net-zero-ready renovation in the city of Ottawa. It’s something that sets the company apart as a true leader, a pioneer, in environmental renovation.

But Lagois has always created the most energy efficient renovations of the time, starting more than four decades ago. The Lagois standard with all projects is to build towards net zero, to plan holistically so a home’s future is always on the horizon.

How to understand the process

It’s a careful and detailed three-phase process. Read more, here.

A net zero renovation means financial savings and potentially higher resale values. It’s a smart and forward-thinking choice for homeowners and property investors. Homeowners can future-proof their property against rising energy costs and potential regulatory changes, because a net zero home has long-term value.

Why invest in a net zero renovation?

In the face of a changing climate, investing in a net zero renovation gives you resilience against big weather events because your home, equipped with things like storm-resistant roofing and flood-resistant foundations, is less likely to require costly repairs or expensive insurance claims. It is truly the way of the future.
