A new kitchen is an exciting possibility, but where do you start? What should you be asking yourself?

There are lots of things to consider before you even choose your renovator. In fact, most renovators appreciate it when you have done some thinking, planning, dreaming, and research so they know your general vision.

  • Start with your existing kitchen layout. Do you want to keep the same one, or are you thinking of a complete change?
  • How do you want the flow of your kitchen to go? Do you need the help of a good designer to advise you about this?
  • Do you have a particular style in mind? Farmhouse kitchen, for example, or an ultra-modern chef’s kitchen?
  • How do you want to use your kitchen? For entertaining guests? Family gatherings? Or just for yourself?
  • What sort of counters and backsplash would you like? Do some research. Check out websites, home shows, showrooms, and magazines. Ask the opinions of friends who have had recent renovations.
  • What kind of floors will you have? You will certainly want something that lasts and can withstand just about anything ‒ as well as look beautiful and be easy to clean. Again, do product research.
  • What about cabinetry? Open shelves? Roll-out shelves? Hidden storage? A full pantry? Deep drawers? What kind of finish?
  • What appliances will you be using, and how will they be accommodated by your choice of cabinets? Would you like a cooktop on your counter?
  • How about lighting? Will you want lots of natural light with big windows or a skylight? Under-cabinet and over-counter lighting? Pot lights in the ceiling? Night lights along baseboards?
  • Will you want an island? What kind? How big? Will it act as a seating/eating/visiting area as well as a space for food preparation? Will it have storage or shelving?
  • What are some of the things you absolutely must have in your new kitchen? For example, a built-in oven, more open space, a walk-in pantry?
  • Do you have a particular timeline? How long are you prepared for this project to continue, and ideally when would you like it to be completed?
  • Who will be doing your renovation? Do you know of contractors in your area who specialize in kitchens, design, and renovation? What is their reputation? Are you prepared to interview two or three companies and get full estimates?
  • Do you have any ideas yet about a colour scheme? Your designer will help you, but it’s something you might start considering now.

Overwhelming? An experienced renovator or design-build firm like Lagois Design-Build-Renovate will have a stress-free process to help make informed decisions.
