When golf is like bacon

Ask a golfer like Herb Lagois about the best way to play golf, and he shares some tips from others who have walked the course – just in time for the 15th Annual Charity Lagois Golf Tournament on Sept. 13:

“I’ve learned one thing from jumping motorcycles that was of great value on the golf course, the putting green especially: whatever you do, don’t come up short.”

Evel Knievel

“Ninety percent of putts that are short do not go in.”

Yogi Berra

“That ball is so far left, Lassie couldn’t find it if it was wrapped in bacon.”

 David Feherty

A spoiled walk?

“Show me a man who is a good loser and I’ll show you a man who is playing with his boss.”

 James Patrick Murray

“Golf is a good walk spoiled.”

 Mark Twain

“Golf can be best defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle.”

David Feherty

“Golf is the cruelest of sports. Like life, it’s unfair. It’s a harlot. It leads you on. It never lives up to its promises…It’s a boulevard of broken dreams. It plays with men. And runs off with the butcher.”

 Jim Murray

Golf is what you ask for

“Golf is like life in a lot of ways – All the biggest wounds are self inflicted.”

Bill Clinton

“If you think it’s hard meeting new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.”

 Jack Lennon

“I played like crap, he played like crap. He just outcrapped me.”

 Wayne Grady

Golf and your business

“I once showed Pat Bradley my swing and said, “What do I do next?” Pat replied, “Wait until the pain dies down.”

Bob Hope

“If you break 100, watch your golf. If you break 80, watch your business.”

 Joey Adams

“I was lying ten and had a thirty-five-foot putt. I whispered over my shoulder: ‘How does this one break?’ and my caddie said: ‘Who cares?’ ”

Jack Lemmon

When golf loves kids

And Herb’s tip?

“My only tip is to have fun and keep your head down, something I’m still working on (the head down part).”

Another tip?

Come to the Lagois tournament and have fun. You don’t have to be a professional golfer. It’s “best ball”, so play the best shot each time.

“Whether you’re experienced or it’s your first time golfing,” Herb says, “Join us at Manderley. It will be fun!”

You’ll be helping to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, one the favourite Lagois charities. It’s a special and comforting place, a home away from home, for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
