There are many important things you should be sure of when you’re considering which contractor to hire. Learn as much as you can before you sign anything. When you interview someone for your project, ask:

  • Have you undertaken this type of renovation in the past?
  • How long have you been in business under this company name?
  • What qualifications do you have?
  • Are you a RenoMark® contractor?
  • Are you or your company registered with all governing bodies for this industry?
  • What issues or problems can arise once work begins? How do you deal with them?
  • How do you handle situations that are not foreseen ‒ something that causes a delay or cost increase? Can you give an example of such a situation and how you resolved it?
  • Do you have your own employees, or do you use sub-contractors only? Are your sub-contractors licensed, certified, and insured?
  • How many projects like this (size, style, age) do you have on the go or in the foreseeable future?
  • What is not included in your quotation that you know I will need?
  • What’s the best way of communicating with each other? How available will you be? How available do I need to be?
  • What warranties do you offer?
  • Who will supervise the project?
  • Will you arrange a dumpster onsite and its removal?
  • How will you protect my home against dirt, dust, damage?
  • What is your policy for cleaning up my home?
  • How will you minimize noise and disruption to our family and the neighbours?
  • Do you supply references? References for any sub-contractors or suppliers?
  • What is your design process?
  • What is your process in general?
  • How will you handle any toxic substances if they are found during demolition?
  • What insurance do you have? What guarantees will we have after the work is finished?
  • What are your terms of payment?
  • What is the expected timeline for this project?
  • How will my project be managed?
  • Can I see a portfolio of your work?
  • Is there anything else I should know that I might not be aware of now?
