House Exterior Renovation by the River

RETIREMENT ON THE RIVER

Since the couple plans to age in this home and one grew up here, it was critical to maintain existing elements, but to make it more open and to provide easier access. We altered this rear deck layout to accommodate a seating area, covered for shade, that enjoys river views. We added a staircase for access to the river and backyard.

BEFORE

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We added a breezeway and garage addition to give the homeowners covered access to the home, and added a lift to make it barrier-free. We angled the garage to create a nice presentation upon entry from the existing driveway, adding curb appeal as well as easy entry to and exit from the garage.

The space for the kitchen already existed but it was cut off from the rest of the house. We removed walls and a hallway to create an open-concept kitchen with a large island and ample storage. The layout is great for entertaining. Guests can be at the island or in the dining and living areas without feeling isolated. The large island creates an excellent work surface and place to gather while the work zone is on the other side, outside the path of travel.

To maintain the character of the home, we kept all original window and door openings in their existing locations. We added motorized automated solar roll blinds to limit the exposure of harmful ultraviolet rays. We rotated the stairs in their opening to create better flow and reveal gorgeous river views. The recreation room is complete with a pool table and small bar. The laundry has lots of storage and an exterior pass-through door for access to the backyard.
