GOHBA Award Finalist - Custom Home

Custom Homes

The design criteria for this stunning arts & crafts home was to take advantage of the lake views, integrate indoor/outdoor living, incorporate energy efficient building, mechanical systems and green building techniques, while maintaining single storey living.

The home is situated on the site overlooking a lake across the road. A large covered porch was used to help with solar shading (western exposure) and as a covered entry & sitting area. Orientation of the home also takes advantage of prevailing winds (cross ventilation) minimizing the use of air conditioning. Indoor/outdoor integration was achieved by adding a deck off the solarium & great room, covered BBQ area off the kitchen and a front covered porch.  Visual integration was achieved with the ample use of glazing.

Exterior walls were constructed with ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) for optimum energy efficiency and to lessen environmental impact (green building). The floor construction consists of Hambro metal joists with a poured concrete slab embedded with radiant heat tubing – optimum for creating thermal mass. The heating source is a high efficiency, on demand boiler – making this single storey home very energy efficient and comfortable.
